LaVar Ball is taking the reins on his suspended son’s basketball future.
Ball is pulling LiAngelo Ball out of UCLA and off its basketball team, TMZ reported Monday, as the freshman continues to serve an indefinite suspension for a shoplifting arrest in China last month.
The younger Ball and the two freshman teammates with whom he was caught stealing Louis Vuitton sunglasses, Jalen Hill and Cody Riley, missed their eighth game Sunday, the Bruins’ 106-73 win over the University of Detroit Mercy. UCLA is 7-1 without the three players, although the team has fallen out of the Top 25 before conference play begins.
LaVar Ball reportedly considered LiAngelo’s suspension unfair after the charges against him and the others were dropped. The detained players were allowed to return home after President Donald Trump said he spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping and secured their release — though the elder Ball publicly disputed Trump’s involvement.
“We are exploring other options with Gelo,” LaVar told ESPN.com. “He’s out of there.”
The decision puts a wrench in LaVar Ball’s plan to put each of his three sons through one year at UCLA before they become eligible for the NBA draft. Lonzo Ball was selected No. 2 overall by the Lakers this year after leading the Bruins to the Sweet 16.
Ball set a precedent when he pulled his youngest son, LaMelo, out of Chino Hills High School in October over frustration with the head basketball coach. LaMelo already is a 2019 UCLA commit, though that plan could now change.
